Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.
- C G Jung

The “visible” self is a constellation of emotions, perceptions, assumptions, memories, and many other psychological determinants, many of which are unconscious. According to psychodynamic models of psychotherapy, unconscious aspects of the self strive outward for expression, creating the conditions for building a consistent sense of self in the external world. The task of selfhood is to balance inner and outer forces which may sometimes be in conflict. This seminar introduces psychodynamic perspectives on personality formation as “strategies for selfhood.” Personality disorders are explored and defined, and clinical strategies for dealing with each are described.
The presenter, clinical psychologist Dr. Matthew Bennett, will undertake a “guided tour” of personality patterns recognizedin the clinical literature. This tour will be illustrated and amplifiedthrough the artistic interpretations of actor, artist, and visual philosopher Leigh J. McCloskey. Together, the psychologist and the artist underline the need for selfhood in a world which devalues internal work and internal values, explicitly honoring the needs of both psyche
